The Palo Alto Softball team - Spring 2015
Palo Alto Softball Team      UPDATE!
Dec. 12, 2015 post
CHAMPS AGAIN -- For the third straight season the div 5 Palo Alto Softball team finished first (sole possession) in their league. The final record was 9-3. The team had its most successful start at 7-0, but lost 3 of the next games by a total only 5 runs, but finished strong winning the last two games.  The two new players added to our roster this season are Ira Roth and Ricky Kometic. The two other players added 2 previous seasons were Bill Caputo and Martha Moore. These 4 players contributed significantly to our success over the last 3 seasons as they are part of our youth movement (under 70). The other players are Jack Augustine (mgr.), Mike & B.J. Durkin, Mike Boyler, Bob Diette, Dick McPherson, Bernie ODonnell, Mike Plunkett, Bob Pooler, Greg Taylor, and John Zeb . Congrats to all especially the other under 70 players.
And Thanks for the update, Bernie O'Donnell! Nice job!
Photo Background
The Palo Alto Softball team was an original member of the Neighborhood Softball League in 1999 and the past two seasons were special in that the team finished first (for the first time) twice in consecutive seasons. Jack Augustine has always been the manager.

This past season (Spring 2015) the Div 5 Palo Alto softball team celebrated finishing first in two separate divisions. Members (standing back row l-r) are Ed Kuper, John Zeb, Bob Diette, Bob Pooler, Greg Taylor, Dick McPherson, Bill Caputo, and Jack Augustine (Mgr.). (first row l-r) Bernie ODonnell, Mike Durkin, B.J.Durkin, and Mike Plunkett.

Not pictured Martha Moore, and Mike Boyler

Congrats to the whole team and THANKS for sharing the photo, Bernie O'Donnell.
History of the Team
Written by Bernie O'Donnell

HISTORY
The neighborhood league originated in the 1999-2000 time period when the Saddlebrook Fields/Polo Ground were first opened. Before that the Rec league only existed at Knudson Field as the A,B,C leagues on the east side of 27/441. Rec league teams were organized by resident managers and teams were drafted based on individual skills (not ages) which continue today as well. No games were scheduled in the beginning of opening Saddlebrook on Saturdays so Jack Augustine, Joe Sanchez, Dick Johnson, and Don Bauman thought that pickup games on this Field between neighborhoods would be a good activity. Soon the Villages liked the concept and provided jerseys and caps for different neighborhoods all of which were north of Rt 466. For at least 3-4 yrs, they also televised  these games on VNN as a marketing concept to attract new home buyers. None of that exists today, and the leagues are much larger and play at Saddle brook and Buffalo Glen (High School location).

2015 NOTE
Our team today has been very successful over the last year and we have won (for the first time) two consecutive championships in our division (Gray) of Div.5. This league has a much greater variety of ages and we now have by far the best Offensive/Defensive team in our 14 yr. history. Jack Augustine (managed the team since the beginning) and Bernie ODonnell are the only players still playing from the original team. So come out and enjoy watching Palo Alto Softball if you get a chance on Saturdays at Saddlebrook.
