Roundabout Best Practices
Do not change lanes within the roundabout OR as you exit.
Emergency Vehicles Yield to emergency vehicles BEFORE or AFTER the roundabout – DO NOT STOP in the roundabout! Oversize Vehicles Give oversize vehicles extra room because they may need both lanes to maneuver The Approach As you approach the roundabout do two things: 1) Use of turn signal - As you approach a roundabout, use your turn signal to indicate a left or right turn then once in the roundabout, when you have passed the last exit before the one you want, indicate your exit using your right turn signal. |
2) Choose your lane based on:
o Exiting the roundabout more than half way around? Use the left-hand lane.
o Exiting the roundabout less than half way around? Use the right-hand lane.
o Continuing straight? Use either lane unless signs or markings indicate otherwise.
Entering the Roundabout
o Yield to traffic already on the roundabout
o Do not enter next to a vehicle as the vehicle might be exiting at the next exit. Stagger it arranging traffic in a zigzag order.
o Turn your turn signal off (unless you are exiting at the first opportunity)
(on approach, signal a left or right turn; once in the roundabout and when you have passed the last
exit before the one you want, use your right turn signal to say you are exiting).
Within the roundabout:
o Do not change lanes within the roundabout OR as you exit. (worth repeating)
o If you are on the outside lane and a car is directly next to you on the inside lane, use caution as you approach any turn offs. He
may go straight while you want to continue around the circle.
o Do not stop except to avoid a collision. You have the right-of-way over entering traffic. Keep moving in a counter-clockwise
direction.
o Follow pavement striping and arrows for guidance – exit roundabouts with caution.
o Be aware of other vehicles in the roundabout.
o Do not overtake other vehicles or bicyclists within the roundabout.
o When you have passed the last exit before the one you want, indicate your exit using your right turn signal (before that, as you
approach a roundabout, use your turn signal to indicate a left or right turn).
o You will see a striped channelization island on some roundabouts, it reduces the circulatory roadway to one lane approaching a
single-lane exit.
Be Very Cautious
Because this is an over 55 community, most of our reflexes, hearing and vision have diminished with time, possibly including your own. Be very cautious on roundabouts. Roundabouts and its Best Practices improve the flow of traffic within The Villages.
