Dade's Reenactment (and eat at the event)
Signup deadline: Thurs., Jan. 2, 2020 / Noon (signup via email!! - see notes below)
If you have never seen a battle reenactment (or if you have)... - it
is exciting and interesting event. This battle reenactment only
happens once a year. The people who take part in it dress the
part and are passionate about history.
Overview:
Dade's Reenactment commemorates the start of the Second Seminole War that began at the park on December 28th, 1835. The event includes Battle Reenactment each day at 2 pm, period soldier and Seminole camps, tree cutting and barricade building, games and activities for children, historic arts and crafts, cannon firing and sutler trade fair. We'll eat at the Battle Reenactment event (see below).
The Reenactment:
WATCH HISTORY COME TO LIFE - We [Dade Battlefield Historic State Park] call them “living historians.”
That’s because the dozens of dedicated reenactors who come together at Dade Battlefield Historic State Park each year to recreate Dade’s Battle of 1835 breathe life into long-ago events that can feel sterile and distant when experienced only through the written word. Seminoles on horseback, soldiers clad in sky blue, the rattle of musketry and crash of cannon fire evoke a truer understanding of the violent clash that unfolded here on December 28, 1835.
Meal at the event:
In addition to witnessing the battle recreation, you can spend the day touring authentic period soldier and Seminole camps, watching pioneer craft demonstrations, or sampling the fare of a variety of food vendors. Arrayed in a long rows of canvas tents, period vendors called “sutlers” offer an array of period wares.
Location: Dade Battlefield Historic State Park, 7200 Co Rd 603 (also known as 7200 Battlefield Parkway), Bushnell, FL 33513
Web site: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/dade-battlefield-historic-state-park
Event Times: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm EST; Battle Reenactment at 2 pm
Fees: Cost is $5/person, children under 6 free, parking $3/vehicle (so carpools help)

Barberville Pioneer Settlement Annual Fall Country Jamboree (and eat at the event)
Signup deadline: Thurs., Oct. 30 / Noon
Overview:
Barberville Pioneer Settlement Annual Fall Country Jamboree is one of the area's most unique cultural events. It is one of the longest running events in Volusia County. This event features examples of pioneer living that included blacksmith demonstrations, cane grinding, a boil, spinning, weaving, wood working,, many more historical demonstrations, music, a Silent Auction and finger Lickin' foods like our Smoked Chicken and BBQ Pulled Pork++.
Details:
The music line up is one that you will have to search far and wide to match. Featuring both well-known established artists as well as the best of the up and coming. Every year we fill all 6 stages and time slots, that’s over 170 performances, and unfortunately have to turn performers away. But that doesn't stop them from just showing up with their instruments and joining in a jam or workshop. With two workshop tents and two jam tents music is abundant! We would like to thank all of the talented teachers who volunteer their time to run these tents.
Bring your grandkids. The very popular "Lil' Abner Fiddle Hunt", our painted rocks and a visit to our farm are favorites for kids of all ages. Visit the Underhill house and learn the history of Volusia County’s oldest brick residents and the folks who lived there. Don’t miss our 17 other historic structures thought the event grounds.
Silent Auction: Don’t forget about our Silent Auction. You’ll be sure to find something special there. Items include Antiques and collectibles, work of local artists and crafters, products from local businesses and donations from supporters. Funds raised will go towards phase two of the restoration of the Underhill house.
Lunch at the event: Finger Lickin' foods like our Smoked Chicken and BBQ Pulled Pork, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Corn Bread, Popcorn, Kettle Corn, Old Fashion Ice Cream, Bake Sale and more from our summer kitchen and area food trucks.
Location: 1776 Lightfoot Lane, Barberville, FL 32105 (West of Route 17, just off of Hwy 40) It is about an hour from Tierra Rec Center, a little north of Deleon Springs and Deland. We'll provide driving directions. Web site.

Silver Springs Glass Bottom Boat Tour then Silver River Museum
Lunch following at Ivy on the Square, Ocala, FL
Location: Silver Springs State Park, Ocala
Overview: The Glass Bottom Boat Tour leaves every half hour. There are interesting things to see both in the woods and in the water (e.g. old movie set props). Then we will all follow each other across the street to the campground area and go to the very interesting Silver River Museum. We still hope to have a docent join us and guide through (not firm yet) but it is still a great museum regardless. One of our Carpool Road Trips took us to the Ivy House Restaurant in Williston, FL. Ivy On The Square, is owned by the same people and we're told have the same great and interesting menu like the Ivy House we all enjoyed (yummy food!). We will order from the menu.
Driving Directions: At Tierra Rec Center, we will provide driving directions to the Springs, the Museum and then to the restaurant.

Villages POLO, golf cart tailgate and see The Villages Precision Golf Cart Drill Team after the Polo game
Meet: Tierra del Sol at 11:30 am (leave 11:45 am; gates open at noon) NOTE: TIME CHANGE
Event: Villages POLO golf cart tailgate and see The Villages Precision Golf Cart Drill Team perform after the Polo game. It will even be fun to follow each other to the Polo fields via golf cart! We'll stay together for a fun caravan, as much as we can so we can arrive at about the same time. If we get separated, meet outside the Polo gate entrance so we can enter together at about noon, after one person pays all of the paid entrance fees.
The Polo Club will be roping off our area so we can do our golf cart tailgate all together. Instead of going to a restaurant before or after the CRT, we'll all bring food to munch on as we watch the Polo and Drill Team show.
Bring a folding chair if you'd like to sit there instead of in your golf cart.
Food / Drink: Bring nibbles / appetizers to share and we'll munch the day away. Ideas: chips, dip, cookies, salads, appetizers or other finger foods. Anything you bring can be store-bought or home-made. We'll provide forks, plates and napkins and the table to lay food out on.
Bring your own beverage (including alcoholic beverages of choice...).
Fee: If you've not paid already, please pay $15 per person at Tierra Rec Center when we meet and please bring the correct change. Call Kathy to reserve your spot so we can give a headcount to the Polo Club by May 3, as agreed.

Event: Villages POLO golf cart tailgate and see The Villages Precision Golf Cart Drill Team perform after the Polo game. It will even be fun to follow each other to the Polo fields via golf cart! We'll stay together for a fun caravan to the Polo Fields, as much as we can,so we arrive at about the same time. If we get separated, meet outside the Polo gate entrance so we can enter together at about noon, after one person pays all of the paid entrance fees.
The Polo Club will be roping off our area so we can do our golf cart tailgate all together. Instead of going to a restaurant before or after the CRT, we'll all bring food to munch on as we watch the Polo and the Drill Team show.
Bring a folding chair or sit in your golf cart.
Call Kathy to reserve your spot so we can give a headcount to the Polo Club by May 3 as agreed.

The Wings of Freedom Tour, put on by the Collings Foundation, will feature three vintage World War II aircraft on display:
- The B-17, named “Nine O Nine,” is one of only nine Flying Fortresses still operational in the United States. A four-engine heavy bomber, the B-17 served in every WW II combat zone.
- The B-24 Liberator, known as “Witchcraft,” is the only plane of its type still flying anywhere in the world. Approximately 18,500 of the bombers were produced, including more than 4,600 made by Ford.
- The P-51 Mustang “Toulouse Nuts” fighter that will be on display is the winner of the prestigious Grand Champion award for restoration. During the war, P-51s were used as fighter escorts for bombers flying from England to Germany. The iconic plane also is synonymous with the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American pilots who flew hundreds of escort missions in P-51s marked with red tails and never lost a bomber to an enemy fighter.

Bill Thuemmel made the suggestion that we consider changing CRTs to become overnight trips. We like the idea! We're looking at doing CRTs four times per year: Sept/Oct, Nov/Dec, Apr, early June
- We'll do the best we can to set up nice hotel/motel lodging at a decent mid-range rate (at group discount when possible and
if you sign up by the signup deadline).
- We'll figure out tour(s)/shows and at times group rates when we can.
- Once there, we'll do what we can to have meal(s) together. Let us know if you have a suggestion for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
- It can be as close as Orlando or Ocala or as far as 3-4 hours from The Villages
- Example possible trips: Sarasota, St. Augustine for the holidays (the lights are supposed to be very good), Space Center (let us know
where you think we should check into going)
Your feedback is welcome. Give us your thoughts on CRTs in April and early June. Where to go, what tours to take, places you recommend for spontaneous meals out.

Fri., October 5 & 6 (for one overnight in Daytona)
Carpool Road Trip (CRT)
Daytona Beach
Proposed to tour the Intl Speedway on Saturday afternoon. Stay in a nice hotel/motel hopefully on the ocean that night and find spontaneous dinner together. On Saturday morning we go to the Casements (what was Rockefeller's Winter Home) then lunch together before heading home. Subject to change - we're still in the planning phase. More details when we have it.
Fri., December 7 & 8 (for one overnight in St. Augustine)
Carpool Road Trip (CRT)
St Augustine - Get in carpools and Tour the Christmas lights together then spontaneous dinner together that evening. Spend the night at a nice hotel/motel. After checking out of the hotel, we could go over and tour the old fort in the morning then have lunch together somewhere in St. Augustine before heading back to the Villages. Subject to change - we're still in the planning phase. More details when we have it.
Change of Plans: We were originally going to go to the Baker House Tour (decorated for Christmas) for a local CRT tour until we changed CRTs to become overnight stays. If you want to get a group together for a visit to the Baker House this coming holiday season, plan it and let us know and we'll pass it along - when and where to meet.
