Welcome Wednesday News Summary
|
|
August 8, 2018 Meetings
I realize after sitting from 8-3 with no lunch and not many laughs (none, as a matter of fact), that I am really glad I am not a politician and that many of the problems in The Villages would be greatly lessened if more people understood “the system”…stop listening to poolside chatter and get the facts! Come to a meeting of your District and find out that you have 5 elected supervisors and a paid staff headed by Richard Baier, who do their best to make our lives good here, but they can do just so much…laws and contracts have to be adhered to. When we bought our homes here, we accepted some responsibility when we signed our contracts. “I didn’t know” is not an acceptable excuse. Some things can be dealt with, others not, and as the adage says, life sometimes is not fair but many of the issues heard could be solved or at least improved upon if people would become more informed on them and communicate better.
So here are short comments, MY interpretation of goings-on, for each District meeting…I challenge you to attend your District meeting or VCDD orientations held each Thursday morning or Amenity Authority meetings: knowledge is a powerful thing and if you work “the system”, “the system” will work. I can validate that here in The Villages.
District 1: As first District to meet in the day, this summary applies to most other districts also: schedule of meetings for next year approved, reduction of fee for community wide Investment Advisory Services approved enthusiastically, Resident Academy format revised to accommodate more participants, and District staff appealing FEMA’s decision that some reimbursements for Hurricane Irma were ineligible.
District 2: same info as District 1 above; lively discussion about the pristine lake becoming a mud hole again and what can be done (testing, decisions to be made based on testing results, District 2 will end up paying for whatever is done but let’s see what the tests show and then act on it; ugly old truck parked for extended time is not prohibited in deed restrictions/plat so can’t be towed until it is unregistered or similar not-allowed circumstances.

Districts 1, 3 and Lady Lake/Lake County residents have one set of rules, District 2 a different set, District 4 is different as well. Courtyard villas stucco and patio villas also have their own rules. So bottom line, check before you repaint.
Tree Removal
Removal of ANY tree with a trunk of 4 inches in diameter is prohibited without first submitting an application to Architectural Review. If it is a canopy tree (not a palm or conifer) a certified arborist will examine the tree and provide a report to the Architectural Review Committee and determine, on a case by case basis, if the tree can come down. Deed restrictions rules state that “all owners shall keep their lots neat and clean.” In general terms it means owners take reasonable care to keep buildings, landscaping, lighting, lawns and other related improvements and fixtures in good condition. Maintenance of landscaping is defined as the exercise of generally accepted garden-management practices necessary to promote a healthy, weed free environment for optimum plant growth. Grass and weeds are considered overgrown when it is allowed to grow to eight (8) inches in height. Shrubbery is considered overgrown when it is allowed to grow up to the soffit or if the shrubbery is obstructing entry to the front door. Homes and lots are expected to be kept free of external unused items such as miscellaneous items (garden hose, bags of top soil, garden equipment, etc.) construction material and other debris. If you see a property that you believe may not be in compliance, please contact the staff at the Community Standards Department at 751-3912.

Monday I attended the workshop SAFE (Stop Adult Financial Exploitation) co-sponsored by the VHA and thought you all would be interested in a few statistics:
- Seniors control 70% of the nation’s wealth
- $2.9 billion a year is lost by seniors to scams and financial exploitation
- 80% of all losses are to people over the age of 50
- only 1 in 10,000 victims report the crimes
- 1 in 5 adults over the age of 65 are victims of financial exploitation
- women are twice as likely to be targets of financial abuse than men
- don’t fall for the most widespread scams: Grandparent Scam (phone call saying they are in dire need of money), Romance scam (“I love you” becomes leads to your empty bank account), Caller ID spoofing (you think it is a legitimate all but the phone number has been manipulated), IRS Scam (there goes your refund), Tech Support Scam don’t ever let anyone have remote access to your computer), Jury Duty scam (judicial agencies will never call you and threaten if you don’t show up), Lottery Scam (how can you win if you never played) and many more just hang up!

Editor’s Comments: As you all know, I attend almost all Welcome Wednesday, Amenity Authority Committee meetings, and District 1 meetings (except when I am on vacation like I have been a lot lately, thank heaven). Most people don’t like attending lots of meetings but doing so is in my blood and I actually enjoy staying up to date on issues and sharing them with all of you in these weekly emails. I welcome your sending me the email addresses of anyone else you know who might like to receive these updates. Now the point of saying all this: it is an election year, and although I am not fond of politics, by going to all these meetings, I see how important it is to stay informed and to step up and become involved. Because of my commitments to the VHA, Helping Hands, multiple clubs and to attending all the meetings I go to, I will not run for office BUT I ENCOURAGE YOU TO GET INVOLVED. You can make a difference! Each District has 5 elected officials who make the decisions that directly effect issues, property values, maintenance assessments, deed compliance and so much more. Many of the supervisors’ terms expire this year and now is your opportunity to step up and run for office….but act fast since the final filing date is 22nd of June. I’ll be happy to put you in touch with someone who can answer your questions. Meantime remember there are 3 positions (seats) up for reelection in Districts 1, 2, 3 and 4. If no one files to run against them, the incumbents will automatically be re-elected. And yes, District Supervisors are paid $200 per meeting.

Opportunities
- April 19, Thursday, Important event: La Hacienda Recreation Center, 6:30 p.m., open to all Villagers, “STAYING ALIVE: EVERYDAY AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS IN THE VILLAGES. Come learn all about comprehensive (and free!) programs that keep you safe and assist in preparing you for emergencies before they happen. - Opening of Villages Dog Park #5 and another Archery Range: Both of these facilities (Dudley Canine Park, Dudley Archery Range) are near Fenney in the far south, but you are welcome to use these facilities from April 26th on. Remember: It is much safer to bring your dogs to an official park with fences than using the “unofficial dog parks” where there have been several dogs off leash (illegal) who were killed. Villages dog parks are safer also because all dogs must be neutered or spayed and the small dog areas are restricted to weight limit of 30 pounds.
- Camp Villages will run this year from June 11 to August 10. Summer camp brochures will be available in late April at all recreation centers.
- Senior Games: The gathering of athletes and packet pickup will be held on Tuesday, April 24 from 4 to 7 pm at Lake Sumter Landing Market Square.
- Walking Trail: Did you know that the Recreation and Parks Department offers a variety of walking sidewalks and trails for residents and guests to enjoy. Many of these walking areas can be found right at your local recreation center. For example: Mulberry Grove Recreation Center: walking distance around the building is 4/5 mile.

These spaces are being built so people can still use this public area, but not continue to ruin the grass with their carts. Please park in the allotted spots…continued property damage will probably result in the area being fenced off. The District put in these parking spots to avoid this so please use them!

More info from water matters.org/conservation.
Executive Golf 2018 Greens Aerification Schedule is included in Welcome Wednesday 04-11-18 .
Pets & Play:
There are 5 dog friendly leash free parks in The Villages. These dog parks are fenced in play areas for both large and small dogs designed so dogs can run freely and socialize with other dogs. Please refrain from allowing dogs on the court facilities (pickle ball, tennis etc.) and recreation fields. Only service animals are permitted in the recreation facilities and District offices.
Guests 19 Years of Age & Older:
With summer visiting season about to start, please be sure to tell your guests 19 years of age and older, to always carry their valid photoID along with their guest ID when they are using The Villages recreation facilities. Potable Water System Field Valves: Preventive maintenance is being done with public drinking water mains being shut down. This will be a temporary interruption in service with a precautionary boil water notice going into effect. All addresses in the affected area will be notified. The tentative schedule of the areas impacted in the upcoming week are 4/9 Water Tower Circle (by west path) and 4/11 at 720 Cortez.

You can go to https://kiddie-smok-alarm-recallusen.expertinquiry.com/ to obtain a replacement. If you would like the Villages Department of Public Safety (Fire Department) to come and check your alarm, call Monday through Friday at 352-250-8280.
Sheriff’s Reminder: SLOW DOWN. There have been over 300 crashes in the Sumter County parts of The Villages in the last quarter. Also: stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, they have the right of way. Pedestrians should walk against the direction of traffic in our streets but on multi-modal paths, walk in the same direction as traffic.
Only Rain Down the Drains: Many of the water retention areas in our community are connected through various inlets and pipes. In addition to storm water, everything that enters the storm water pipes can end up in the water retention areas throughout the community. This includes trash, leaves, fertilizer, soap from washing vehicles, animal droppings and more, Do not place anything in any of the storm water drains…it pollutes and is actually illegal. Running of the Squares, 5k Fun Run at 8 a.m. on Saturday March 31 at Spanish Springs. Day of registration available starting at 7 a.m.
Executive Golf: Planned projects are Hawks Bay greens and tee renovations; new practice green and tee complex at Sliver Lake and rebuilding of two contaminated greens at Bogart. Also, check your web and tee times communications throughout the month of ay. Summer mechanical aeration programs and closures schedules done then so plan accordingly and expect aerated surfaces to be slightly sandy and bumpy over the course of 14-21 days.
Interested in starting an AED Program in your area?: Contact Lt. John Longacre, Villages Public Safety Department to have a very information presentation at your next neighborhood meeting. There are 190 AED units in The Villages now and a need for more. Lives are saved (a man cutting grass was the most recent cardiac arrest victim saved).

Warning: Landscapers, Lawn Services & Tree Trimmers SCAMS: Information provided by Seniors vs Crime (a special project of the Florida Attorney General). Remember:
- Contractors are not required to have a state license…there is none for these types of businesses in Florida
- the term “licenses and insured” may only mean they have license tags and insurance on their pick-up truck - ask to see proof!
- ask for a certificate of insurance that shows they have both general liability and workers’ compensation insurance that is current and in force - if one of them gets hurt on your property, you may be liable
- ask for a copy of their “license”: it probably is just a general business license which anyone can get, not a license to perform certain trades or skills (pest or weed control treatment providers must be licensed by the FL Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services)
- check with Seniors vs Crime (800-203-3099) or the Better Business Bureau and check references before hiring
- get as much as possible in writing (details of work to be done, price, guarantee)
- avoid paying in advance and make payment check out to a company name, not an individual’s name
- get receipts for all payments
