Carpool Road Trip Manatee Boat Trip at Blue Springs State Park
Dinner after at Deland Stockyard Restaurant, Deland
Park Location: 2100 W French Ave, Orange City, FL
Per the Blue Spring Adventures Web site:
On January 4, 1766, John Bartran, a prominent British botanist, rowed his boat past sunning alligators into the clear water of Blue Spring. In 1972, Blue Spring became a State Park with the help of Jacques Cousteau after he filmed the episode called The Forgotten Mermaids. A self-guided boardwalk leads visitors through a lush hammock to Blue Spring where we will board our tour boat. The spring is a scenic area plus it plays a vital role in the survival of one of Florida’s most beleaguered residents – the manatee.
The boat tour ticket booth is located at the docks at the end of the main park road (lower parking lot). Our group has been advised to arrive around noon and enjoy the boardwalk. Then, we are to check in at the ticket booth at least 30 minutes prior to departure (our departure is at 1pm). Full driving directions provided at Tierra when we meet.
About Deland Stockyard Restaurant, in Deland, FL (very near Blue Spring State Park) "As you enjoy our excellent cuisine and interior enhanced with the rich history of Volusia and North Central Florida, I would like to share some of the history of our building which dates back to the 1920's, 1921, to be exact, when Casper Howarth built the original building. Initially the building served as a lodge where guests were housed upstairs and downstairs. A formal dining room was added later. Old New York Avenue was then a bustling main thoroughfare used by merchants to transport goods to the docks on the nearby St. Johns River. Many tourists and visitors who arrived by train stayed at the lodge because it was located near the depot. The lodge soon became a well-known landmark. Many a "horseless carriage" chugged by at speeds as high as 30 miles an hour! Visitors to the lodge could park their tin lizzies out front or tie up their horses out back.
The lodge then became a restaurant called Brooksies and for thirteen years operated by that name. In 1933, the owner obtained the first liquor license issued in Volusia County after prohibition. Townspeople reported that before prohibition was lifted a one quart fruit jar filled with moonshine cost seventy cents. In the 40's Brooksie's became known as "The Palm Inn." Many customers romanced in the fireplace room during the Second World War and still ask to be seated there today. In 1973 the front room was added and the entire building was remodeled. Major changes took place when Lucas King purchased The Palm Inn and changed the name to "Papa Kings." Under his ownership the exterior took on a new look.
This great inn was followed by Pondo's, a longstanding legendary restaurant that was the pride of Volusia. Carrying on the tradition of the past, The DeLand Stockyard delivers a great dining experience for all in a truly historical setting."

About Our Cruise:
She’s a beauty, a real sternwheeler. The Barbara-Lee departs from Historic Downtown Sanford on Oct. 14 with you aboard. Just sign up below. The Rivership, Barbara-Lee is the only authentic sternwheeler traveling the St. John’s River. Measuring 105 feet from stem to stern, the ship was built in 1986 and was extensively refurbished by 2012. Featuring ornate wrought iron railings and massive paddle wheels, the five story rivership accommodates up to 105 guests. All enclosed decks are climate controlled with air conditioning and heating. The Barbara Lee uses diesel engines which are much safer than steam engines to turn its massive twin paddlewheels. The Barbara-Lee features a well-stocked bar and professional bartender ready to serve a glass of wine, beer or one of our signature cocktails.
Experience a different aspect of Florida. Appreciate its wildlife (and I’m not referring to Villagers aboard), Florida beauty, hospitality and warmth in climate-controlled comfort. Our cruise guide will point out wildlife areas of interest and share the history of steamships that once sailed the St. John’s River.
Fees: $68.12 per person. Pay in cash or make checks payable to Palo Alto Club.
Includes: Ours is a four (4) tour, including lunch served on board. Lunch consists of appetizer, salad, entrée, desert, coffee, and iced tea and the famous Rivership Sticky Buns. There will be a cash bar on board. There’s a FREE parking lot immediately next to the ship’s berth at Marina Island. You will receive your driving instructions right to that free parking lot when we meet at Tierra Rec Center.

Join us for a pontoon boat tour on Lake Dora and The Harris Chain of Lakes. The 2-hour tour includes the famous Dora Canal, which has been described as "The most beautiful mile of water in the world." As we cruise, our certified captains and crew will share their stories and local knowledge of the area, its history, flora and fauna. Bald eagles, herons, anhingas, turtles and alligators are all common sightings during our tours.
A 2-hour Narrated Eco-tour of Lake Dora and the Dora Canal. As we cross Lake Dora, you will be given a brief history of Mount Dora and the Harris Chain of Lakes, all the time looking out for bald eagles & osprey. Once under the railway bridge in Tavares we enter the Dora Canal; the first portion of the canal was dug by hand and is the residential section, beyond is the natural jungle river which winds its way through a Cypress Swamp. This tight meandering passage through the 2,000 year old trees allows us to search for herons, egrets, anhingas, turtles and alligators and observe them in their natural habitat. The route is reversed once we turn around in Lake Eustis or Gator Inlet.
Lunch: Pisces Rising Restaurant at 239 W. Fourth Ave, Mt Dora, FL
